My
twin sister Jacq and I were born
and raised in 9 different
towns/cities across Canada. Our
brother John Paul arrived six
years later. My father, John,
was transferred almost every 2
years in his jobs at various
meat companies. He and my
mother, Maxine, have great taste
in music (or maybe I'm biased)
and, growing up, it was heard
pretty much all the time:
sitting on the kitchen floor
listening to albums; at family
"get togethers;" playing records
full-blast while getting ready
for school; after school etc..
When I was 18, I left home and moved to Toronto to check out the plausibility of an acting career. In between jobs as a bartender, casting assistant, and improv comedy actor, I encountered two guys on Yonge Street playing guitar and singing some Eagles tunes. Now, Eagles tunes just beg for some kind of harmony, so I jumped in (they paid me 2 bucks). I was later given a guitar (thank you Steve) and started to play on my own (sometimes with other musicians) in the subway, bars, and the streets. I can still hear the influence of the Canadian folk scene in my songs. In 1991, I moved to New York, and have been here since. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 1. not related to the cognac dynasty 2. learned to play guitar from a "U2" and "Tracy Chapman" songbook 3. played and sang for money at: a) the Toronto Bathurst subway station b) Queen st. west at John st. c) NYC, 79th st. subway station d) Washington Square Park e) Cafe Sine f) The Backfence etc. 4. played rhythm electric guitar for 2 bands in NYC before booking a long-term gig on the series "Law & Order" (had to quit my favorite band "The New Originals" w/ Wally Nichols). 5. playing guitar during my friend Ken's audition for the play "The Buddy Holly Story" brought me to my present home, NYC (I was cast as Buddy's wife "Maria Elena"). |
