John5

John5 might be the most versatile guitarist in hard rock today. That's a big and far-reaching statement, to say the least! But if you look at who he's worked with and listened to his music the guy is a chameleon! He made his bones with Marilyn Manson - and lot's of people think that's what he's all about - goth/shock/metal (or whatever the hell you want to call it). But wait, there's more! John has played and/or written with the likes of David Lee Roth, Paul Stanley, Leah Andreone, Rob Zombie and Lynyrd Skynrd. His diverse set of influences sets the template for his guitar prowess - he can shred with the best of them or layback and do some tasty bluegrass fingerpicking.

There's lots of highlights on his new album THE ART OF MALICE (available everywhere May 11). "Ya Dig" is inspired by John's collaborating with David Lee Roth (and features Billy Sheehan on bass) and sounds like it could be on a Van Halen record or the DLR album he did with Dave. The title cut is an array of amazing chops, from classical to country-fried picking. "J.W." is a country-tinged little romp that could be on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack. "Fractured Mirror" is an homage to John's hero Ace Frehley.

There's a lot to love on this album! From start to finish its a guitar lover's paradise. I love the likes of a Satriani or Vai, but many times their albums lack variety and sheer depth. THE ART OF MALICE has that in abundance and John's guitar prowess is the equal to anyone's.

Vindication

Anyone who says "I hate to say I told you so" is a liar.

ACE FREHLEY scans nearly 17,000 units first week! This, by the way, is better than the first week sales for the last Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons records.

There were some skeptics out there - "Ace hasn't had a record in 20 years," that sort of thing. But never underestimate KISS fans and especially their loyalty to ACE! He's the one everyone roots for, the everyman, the one they can relate too (and when I was a kid he had the coolest makeup of the four!).

And best of all, the overall vibe about the MUSIC, from the fans and press is that Ace DELIVERED! Check out "Genghis Khan" and "Foxy & Free" for proof.

Ace is back and we told you so!!!

Ace Fuckin’ Frehley

Hello Blog World!
I am the Marketing Director for the new Bronx Born/Rocket Science release, Anomaly, by Guitar Legend, Ace Frehley. In stores Sept 15, 2009
There was a great blog posted by Eddie Trunk, That Metal Show on VH-1 that I would like to share with everyone.
22-Jul-09A report on the new Ace Frehley CD!
7/22/09: Met up with Ace Frehley last night in NJ to hear his final version of his new CD Anomaly. I had been talking to Ace often over the last few months helping him where I could navigate the music business in 2009 and some thoughts on his upcoming release. As he stated on my radio show this past Monday I talked him out of releasing a cover of Sweet's "Fox On The Run" as a first single, my thinking being that after twenty years he should no way lead with a cover as the first new music people will hear from him! After talking it over with his new management they decided I was right so the first song will be an original titled "Outer Space" which sums up Ace perfect! Was fun to put my A&R hat on again as Ace was the first artist I ever worked with in that capacity back in my Megaforce label days. Ace wanted me to hear the final product and told me he was going to a venue not far from me in NJ (PNC) to jam a song with Nickelback who were playing. Ace's new management also handles them, so that was the connection. I arrived at PNC to late to see Ace play Highway To Hell with Nickelback but it was super last minute with him literally getting out of his car backstage and walking out, but by all acounts fun for all. After the jam Ace and I sat in my car in the backstage lot and listened to the whole CD together. I had heard this album in various forms and mixes through the years but this was the first time mastered and done and with the final mix. I'll say what I have said all along; Kiss and Ace fans will love this. It is exactly the type of album you would want and expect from Ace. Straight up in your face hard rock. Probably the most striking thing about the album is Ace's voice. He is past three years sober (there is a song about his battle with the bottle on the CD) and singing like the '78 album. A friend of mine who was in the car said the exact same thing. His voice sounds great due to the fact he is clean for sure. Guitar tones sound great as does the playing. Ace sings the entire CD and there are two instrumentals; another in the Fractured series ends the CD and then there is a Zep like heavy jam called "Space Bear". I know hard core Kiss fans will smile at that title! Other stand out tracks for me were "Change The World" (again great vocal), "A Little Below The Angels", "Too Many Faces" and the super kick ass "Sister" , a track that has been around for a bit but sounds great here. The album has a great deal of edgy tracks but it's also dynamic with some Beatles touches in some songs and a real nod to some early 70's stuff. The guitar work is classic Ace as well. Anton Fig handles most of the drums and is a monster as always. Ace is giving his fans exactly what they would want with this album, and who knows, in this age of Guitar Hero and Rock Band he will no doubt grab some new ones as well. After all guitar hero = ACE FREHLEY! Can't wait for everyone to hear it and of course we will do much with Ace and the album on the radio shows when we get closer to release. I thank Ace for the early listen and as a long time close friend I am extremely proud of him not only for making the album he wanted to, but for being a changed man the last few years.

If your rocket landed on a desert planet…

Here's some food for thought to kick this adventure off.  A twist on the old desert island discussion; how about the first colony on Mars, that certain theorists keep suggesting should be established?  (We are Rocket Scientists after all, we might as well lead the charge.)  What music would we bring to audibly populate the new colony and not die of silence?  Here are my picks, from our current crop of clients:

Anomaly - Ace Frehley: Who better to join us in our new adventure than the Space Man himself?  I'd blip "Outer Space", but sorry kids, you'll have to wait for a preview of that one. (acefrehley.com)

Rush - Black Gold: For those of you who know me, I think this album is about 5 steps short of perfect.  From the synth groove of "Detroit" to the heartbreak of "Canyon" to the get down boogie down fabulousness of "The Comedown", i'm all about this record.   (blackgoldmusic.com)

A Little Happiness - Aimee Allen - I'm not sure if Mars has seasons, or what the light situation is like, so i'm assuming that we're going to have to bring some feeling of sunshine, good times, and beach vibes with us.  I Love this record.  Honorary mentions to round out the Mars Summertime Party?  Music For Cougars - Sugar Ray and Bright Side of Life - Rebelution. (aimeeallen.com, sugarray.com, myspace.com/rebelution)

Obviously, I'd have to get the party going too.  So...for those hot (cold?) nights on Mars...I'll be crankin up Invaders Must Die - The Prodigy (that's for the party AND a message to any other aliens that might be out there with designs on Mars), and The Legend of the Black Shawarma - Infected Mushroom to remind me we better bring some food with us while we rock it in Space.  Check em out - (theprodigy.com and infected-mushroom.com)

Comment away - what are your must haves these days?

I spend my days between my desk and the moon. I'll always be a Virginian at heart (go Hoos), but I'm an official Californian now! I might become a professional skydiver or a spy when I retire from the music game, but i'll never tell! Here at RS? I'm the VP of Bits and Bytes.
